Dependent
Visa for bringing in a family member to stay together in Japan. Labor is permitted.
Engineer/Specialist in Humanity/International Services
Working Visa for engineers, office workers, translators, etc. Graduation from a Japanese vocational school or higher, or university of your home country is required.
Designated Activities
Visa for a limited number of activities, such as for students who have graduated from a Japanese school and wish to continue job hunting. Labor is permitted. Due to COVID multiple extension of this type of Visa is no longer available.
Specified Skilled Worker (SSW)
Visa for workers of the 14 designated occupations (nursing care, accomodation, food services, etc). Holder of this Visa is allowed to work or change jobs for 5 years.
Spouse or child of Japanese national
Visa for the spouse or child (biological/adopted) of a Japanese citizen. There are no restrictions such as residence activities or work limitations, giving freedom in job hunting.
Spouse or child of permanent resident
Visa for the spouse or biological child of a permanent resident. There are no restrictions such as residence activities or work limitations, giving freedom in job hunting.
Long-term resident
Visa that allows you to stay during a certain period of time without a designated activity, while retaining your original nationality.
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (a)・Highly Skilled Professional (ii)(Highly Academic Research Activities)
Visa for foreigners who contribute to Japan's economic development with their advanced knowledge and skills, with a maximum period of 5 years. Holders are given various benefits such as lesser work restrictions for spouse.
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (b)・Highly Skilled Professional (ii)(Highly specialized and technical activities)
Activities engaged in knowledge or work in the fields of natural sciences and humanities performed under contract with a public or private institution in this country.
Highly Skilled Professional (i) (c)・Highly Skilled Professional (ii)(Advanced Management and Administration Activities)
Activities that involve business management or management duties for public or private institutions in Japan.
Short-Term Visit
Visa for the visit of a spouse, child, or parent with a maximum period of 90 days. Labor is not permitted.
Official
Activities as a person engaged in official business of a foreign government or international organization approved by the Government of Japan, or as a member of a family belonging to the same household as such a person (excluding those pertaining to the status of residence "Diplomat").
Medical Services
Activities engaged in services related to medical care that are to be performed by physicians, dentists, or other persons legally qualified to do so. Examples include physicians, dentists, and nurses.
Careworker
Activities in which a licensed caregiver engages in the work of providing care or providing guidance in care under contract with a public or private agency in Japan. An applicable example is a caregiver.
Skilled Labor
Activities to engage in skilled trades in special fields of industry performed under contract with public or private organizations in Japan. Examples include cooks of foreign cuisine, sports instructors, aircraft pilots, and craftsmen processing precious metals, etc.
Technical Intern Training
The technical internship system was established to transfer skills, technology, or knowledge cultivated in Japan to developing regions, etc., and to contribute to "human resource development" that will play a key role in the economic development of the said developing regions.
Education
Activities to provide language education and other education at elementary schools, junior high schools, compulsory education schools, high schools, secondary education schools, special support schools, special training schools, or various schools in Japan, or educational institutions equivalent thereto in terms of facilities and organization. Examples include language teachers at junior high schools, high schools, etc.
Business and Management
Activities to engage in the management of trade or other business in Japan or to engage in the administration of such business (excluding activities to engage in the management or administration of business which may not be legally conducted without the qualification listed in the Legal and Accounting Business section of the table in Appended Table 1-2 of the Immigration Control Act). Applicable examples are business owners and managers of companies, etc.
Artist
Music, art, literature, or other artistic activities involving income (excluding those related to the status of residence "Entertainer"). Examples include composers, painters, writers, etc.
Professor
Activities to conduct research, to supervise research, or to teach at a university, equivalent institution, or college of technology in Japan. Examples include university professors.
Entertainer
Activities related to entertainment such as theater, performance, sports, etc., or other entertainment activities (excluding activities listed in the Business and Management section of the table in Appended Table 1-2 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act). Examples include actors, singers, dancers, professional athletes, etc.
Researcher
Activities to engage in work to conduct research based on a contract with a public or private organization in this country (Excluding the activities listed in the Professor section of the table in appended table 1-1 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act) Applicable examples are researchers at government-related organizations, private companies, etc.
Intra-company Transferee
Activities listed in the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services section of the table in Appended Table 1-2 of the Immigration Control Act, in which an employee of a public or private organization with a head office, branch office, or other business office in Japan is transferred to a business office in Japan for a fixed period of time to perform activities at the said business office. An applicable example is a person who is transferred from a business office in a foreign country.
Trainee
Activities to acquire skills, etc., to be accepted by a public or private organization in Japan (excluding activities listed in Technical Intern 1 of Table 2 and in the Study Abroad section of this Table). Examples of applicable activities are trainees.
Religious Activities
Missionary and other religious activities conducted by a religious leader dispatched to Japan by a foreign religious organization. Examples include missionaries dispatched by foreign religious organizations.
Cultural Activities
Academic or artistic activities that do not involve income, or activities to conduct specialized research on Japanese unique culture or arts, or activities to acquire them under the guidance of an expert (excluding the activities listed in the "Study abroad, training" section of the table in Appended Table 1-4 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act). Examples include researchers of Japanese culture.
Legal/Accounting Services
Activities to engage in services related to law or accounting that are supposed to be performed by foreign lawyers, foreign certified public accountants, or other persons legally qualified to do so. Examples include attorneys at law and certified public accountants.
Student
Japanese universities, technical colleges, and high schools (including the second semester of secondary schools) or high school or junior high school of a special needs school (including the second semester of compulsory education and the first semester of secondary school) or junior high school or elementary school of a special needs school (including the first semester of compulsory education school) or activities to receive education at an elementary school, a specialized training school, or various schools of a special needs school, or an institution equivalent to these in terms of equipment and organization. Examples include students and students of universities, junior colleges, technical colleges, high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools.
Research(Transfer)
Activities to engage in research work based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan (excluding activities listed in the Professor section of the table in Appended Table 1-1 of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act). Examples of applicable activities include government agencies and private companies, etc.
Journalist
News gathering and other journalistic activities conducted under contract with foreign news organizations. Examples include journalists and cameramen of foreign news organizations.
